CINCINNATI, OHIO — Contemporary Dance Theater, Cincinnati presenter of modern and contemporary dance, continues its 40th Anniversary Season with its February presentation of ZviDance, a dance troupe from New York City. The company performs Friday and Saturday, February 1 and 2, 2013 at the Aronoff Center for the Arts Jarson-Kaplan Theater. Following Friday evening’s performance, Contemporary Dance Theater will host a free meet-the-artists and Q&A reception. At Contemporary Dance Theater’s studio in College Hill, intermediate and advanced dancers are invited to take class from ZviDance on Saturday, February 2, 2013.
Led by Israeli-born Zvi Gotheiner, ZviDance is a sharp company of athletic and virtuosic dancers. The company is shaped by a collaborative model of creation, involving the ensemble and designers from the initial research phase, pushing a creation process within an inter-disciplinary format.
Contemporary Dance Theater has commissioned a performance of ZviDance’s Zoom, which first premiered in New York City in 2010. Zoom by ZviDance mixes original music, dance, video projection, and real-time internet interactions to explore the evolving landscape of virtual communities. Audience members are invited not only to leave their cell phones turned on, but to participate in the evening via their mobile devices.
ZviDance has received critical accolades, called “charming and ingenious” by Village Voice and “thrilling” and “magnificent,” with “whole-hearted dancers” by Classical Voice of North Carolina.Dance Magazine has said, “One does not just watch a dance by Zvi Gotheiner. One enters a world with its own internal logic, a sensual, organic world of movement, language, and images where one is pulled along by currents unseen and inevitable.”
Tickets are available now ($22-32), with money-saving subscriptions and flex-packs to the Contemporary Dance Theater’s season, via Cincinnati Arts Association at (513) 621-ARTS (2787), online at cincinnatiarts.org, or in person (which saves on fees!) at 650 Walnut Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202.
