"Controllable Whirler" by Paul Schuette
Cincinnati, Ohio: The Performance and Time Arts series will set off an explosion of contemporary dance, music, poetry and performance art, on Friday and Saturday, May 14-15, at the College Hill Town Hall in Cincinnati. The show, sponsored by Contemporary Dance Theater, showcases p.t.a.’s usual mix of adventurous, experimental neglected, and otherwise off-the-beaten path performance work. Artists include musicians Nicole DeGreg and Kimberly Schwartz, choreographer Margaret Donohue, dancers Kori Martodam and Emmeram Morning, performance artist Ethan Philbrick, composer Paul Schuette, and poet F. Keith Wahle collaborating with dancer Kari Olson.
Middletown choreographer MARGARET DONOHUE has presented work in two previous p.t.a. shows. Ms. Donohue’s choreography for “Ma Is As Selfless as I Am,” will be performed by SAMMI BOWYER, JENNY HUGHES-WILSON, LAUREN SCHAEFFER, CASSIE WILSON, and EMILY WEBER. Ms. Donohue’s tightly choreographed work will be complemented by a dance improvisation by KORI MARTODAM and EMMERAM MORNING, using a text composed by Mr. Morning. A second collaboration of dance and text will be performed by KARI OLSON and F. KEITH WAHLE. Mr. Wahle will read a new poem entitled, “The Elephant in the Room,” with Ms. Olson’s dance movement as accompaniment. NICOLE DeGREG and KIMBERLY SCHWARTZ are classically trained musicians who are using their p.t.a. appearance as an opportunity to explore more personal and more improvisational possibilities in their music. PAUL SCHUETTE’s composition, “Feedback Required’ generates electronic feedback, using a microphone and speakers. The feedback sounds are sent through a sophisticated computer program, which activates three mechanical string instruments constructed by the composer. The composition explores the dualities of electronic and acoustic sound, live performance and mechanically generated sound, and improvisation and rigidly regulated computer programs. ETHAN PHILBRICK’s performances often confront and engage the audience with social, personal, and artistic issues. This p.t.a. show promises to display an explosively diverse range of different artistic visions. But as different as all the artists may be, their shared characteristic is a profound desire to burst past the limits of conventional art and entertainment. Come and be part of the fireworks. The Performance and Time Arts series remains a bi-annual highlight of Contemporary Dance Theater presentation programming. The May 2010 series is produced by F. Keith Wahle and Kori Martodam and the 2009-2010 PTA Committee: Judith Mikita, Shirley Maul, Reka Juhasz, Gloria Esenwein, and Jefferson James. The Performance and Time Arts series is a project of Contemporary Dance Theater, which receives funding from the Fine Arts Fund and the Ohio Arts Council as well as individual donors. CELEBRATING ITS 37TH SEASON! Contemporary Dance Theater was founded in 1972 by Jefferson James and remains the only arts organization in the Tri-State dedicated to promoting and presenting contemporary dance. CDT operates a dance studio and performance space in the historic College Hill Town Hall, 1805 Larch Avenue, Cincinnati, Ohio 45224.
