| | Photos by Andy Snow | Primarily an African American company, DCDC holds the largest
collection in the world of classic works by black choreographers.
Since its founding in 1968, DCDC has preserved the African presence in
modern dance while enriching its repertoire with exciting new
choreography. By all accounts, DCDC is one of the great success
stories in American modern dance. | | In the November concert are two works by former Artistic Director Kevin Ward: Etudes, set to the music of Johannes Brahams, and Love and the Weather, to a collage of Motown hits. Unresolved, a duet choreographed by Shonna Hickman-Matlock, describes two lovers trying to decide their future. |

| Also in the November concert is Children of the Passage by Donald McKayle
and Ronald K. Brown. This work was commissioned by the National
Afro-American Museum and Cultural Center as part of a major project,
When the Spirit Moves: the Africanization of American Movement. The
creation and debut of Children of the Passage, along with numerous
other classic works performed by DCDC, have been captured in Free to
Dance, a documentary on the history of Black modern dance in America,
aired on PBS “Great Performances.” |
