Kids Dance Classes Fall 2015

FALL 2015

NEW!

3-class “try it out” session beginning November 30 for these classes.  $27 cash/check, $28 credit card.  MUST register at least 3 days in advance.

  • Zumba® Kids, Jr (Ages 4-7) – Mondays 5:30-6:15 pm (Nov 30, Dec 7, 14)
  • Hip Hop for Kids (Ages 8-12) – Mondays 6:15-7:00 pm (Nov 30, Dec 7, 14)
  • Breakdance for Kids (Ages 7-12, 2nd grade and up) – Tuesdays 6:15-7:15 pm  (Dec 1, 8, 15)
  • Modern for Kids (ages 8-12) – Saturdays 9:20-10:15 am (Dec 5, 12, 19) – we are still taking registrations through Thurs, Dec 3

Fall – Two 7-week sessions
  • Session 1: Sept 9 – Oct 27
  • Session 2: Oct 28 – Dec 19
  • Register for one or both sessions
  • All kids classes require pre-registration (no drop-ins).  Deadline for registration is 3 days before the first class.  Please contact us if you miss a deadline, to see whether or not we are still accepting registrations.
  • Observation dates will be the last week of Fall Session 2 for classes running (African for Kids, Yoga for Kids, and Shake & Create).

Kids Dance Classes Fall 2015 Registration Information

When are registrations due?

Registrations with payments are due 3 days before the first class of each session, but please register at least one week in advance.

  • If minimum registrations are not met by the deadline, classes will be cancelled.
  • If you miss a deadline, contact us [info below] as we may still be accepting students.
What does it cost?

$63 cash/check or $66 credit card for each 7-week session. 

NO REFUNDS for missed classes.
No pro-rated prices for beginning after first class of session.

Kids Dance Schedule

MONDAYS
Zumba® Kids, Jr. with Candice Wortham, 5:30-6:15pm, Ages 4-7 (Studio C)

These classes are rockin’, high-energy dance parties packed with kid-friendly routines.  We break down steps, add games, activities and cultural exploration elements into the class structure.  Hip Hop dance and more!

Hip Hop with Candice Wortham, 6:15-7:00pm, Ages 8-12 (Studio C)

This hip hop class is open to both beginners and experienced dancers ages 8-12. Students will learn the classics along with the latest moves in hip hop, through combinations and choreographed routines.  They will be encouraged to bring their own creativity to the room through games and activities. This is a class where they can let loose, be free, and let their inner star shine!

TUESDAYS

African Dance for Kids with Shakira Adams, 5:30-6:15pm, ages 6-10 (Studio A) – Summer Session 1 only

Shakira, the adult African Dance class teacher, and will create a kids version of her classes that are fun and easy to follow.  Kids will strengthen their muscles and sense of rhythm, while they learn about African culture through dance. This class is appropriate for all levels of dance experience.

Breakdance with Brent Fields, 6:15-7:15pm, Ages 7-12, 2nd grade and up (Studio C) 
Beginner/Intermediate

These sessions are for new students and those who want to review breakdance basics of Breaking/B-Boying/B-Girling. Brent Fields will lead these classes in exploring freestyling, starting with fundamentals and progressing through toprocks, drops, footwork, power moves, and freezes. Students will also learn how to dance with individual character and creativity.

WEDNESDAYS

Introduction to Dance with Allison Jacobs, Wednesdays 6:15-7:15pm, Ages 5-8 (Studio B)

This class will introduce your child to the fundamentals of Ballet and Modern. Emphasis will be on developing proper technique, improving strength and flexibility, and increasing dance vocabulary and terms. Students will have an opportunity to utilize their imagination and creativity through various dance games and activities. No previous experience is necessary. Tights, leotards and ballet slippers are encouraged, but not required.

THURSDAYS
   

Ballet for Girls with Allison Jacobs, Thursdays 5:05-6:05pm Ages 7-11 (Studio B)

This is a ballet class for girls only, ages 7-11, who are new to ballet or who have a-little ballet class experience, including students who have taken Introduction to Dance previously.  Emphasis will be on developing proper technique, improving strength and flexibility, and increasing dance vocabulary and terms.  Tights, leotards and ballet slippers are highly encouraged, but not required.

Shake and Create with Allison Jacobs, Thursdays 6:15-7:00pm Ages 3-4 (Studio B or C)

In this class, your child will be introduced to creative movement and dance. Your child will have an opportunity to jump, shake, spin and wiggle, while using their imagination!

Yoga for Kids with Larita Hayden, Thursdays 6:15- 7:00pm, Ages 6-9 (Studio B or C)

Yoga for Kids with Ms. Larita integrates storytelling, games, music, language, and art to engage the whole child. It is a fun class that children enjoy and parents appreciate.  Kid’s Yoga classes allow the children to learn in a multi-sensory environment that explores kinesthetic, visual, aural, inter and intra personal learning.  Class time will include a focus activity; yoga poses; a fun yoga, breathing, or other game to create unity; and a quiet time.  For questions about the class content, email laritahayden@hotmail.com.

SATURDAYS

Modern for Kids with Glenda Figuieredo, Saturdays 9:20-10:20am, Ages 8-12 (Studio A)

If your children are interested in learning Modern, Contemporary, Lyrical or Jazz, this would be the place to start to learn the fundamentals. Basics of Modern dance will be covered including standing and floor warm-ups, across the floor, and center combinations.  All levels of experience in dance are welcome to join.

Tap, Beginner Level 1 with Alissa Stachowski, Saturdays 12:30-1:15pm Ages 6 & up, 1st grade & up (Studio B)

This class if for the beginning tap dancer and will be a progressive class starting in the Fall and continuing through the school year.  Emphasis will be on learning the basics of tap steps and learning to dance to the rhythm of the music. Students will also be challenged to memorize combinations and short routines to be performed for parents at the end of each quarter.


Teachers’ Biographies

Introduction to Dance, Ballet for Girls, and Shake and Create — ALLISON JACOBS has been dancing and teaching in greater Cincinnati and New York City for the past twenty years. Her dance training is primarily focused on Ballet and Modern. Allison is also well versed in Tap, Jazz, Hip-hop, Musical Theater, Swing, and Contact Improvisation. Her dance teaching experience has been at Tanze Performing Arts Studio, Hamilton Ballet Theater, Miami Valley Ballet Theater, Long Island University, Contemporary Dance Theater, Ballet Tech, and Fresh Air Fund. Most recently, Allison has taught dance for Contemporary Dance Theater, Cincinnati Waldorf School, Cincinnati Public Schools, MamLuft&Co. Dance, as well as for the University of Cincinnati and the Cincinnati Public Libraries.  In addition to teaching dance, Allison is a recent graduate of Northern Kentucky University with a degree in Psychology and minors in dance, honors, sociology, and art history. Currently she works for the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, and is attending graduate school for a degree in Library Science.  For more information, please feel free to email her at allison@cdt-dance.orgAllison also teaches Ballet Basics: Stretch and Strengthen for Ages 13-Adult.

Breakdancing for Kids — BRENT FIELDS holds a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from Morehead State University and is an American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Certified Exercise Physiologist and Personal Trainer. He has worked with Jaron Joiner and danced in an opening performance for Lupe Fiasco, Juvenile, and other artists, City Nights (Northern Kentucky), Fountain Square Slam Concert Series (Cincinnati), and community events as a Breaker/B-Boy/Hip-Hop dancer. He has professional audition experience (Cirque Du Soleil and Paula Abdul’s Dance Show). Brent also teaches Breakdancing for Adults and Mature Teens.

Zumba® Kids, Jr. and Hip Hop for Kids — CANDICE WORTHAM is a mother of two and a Licensed practical nurse. Her passion is dance, where she gets to share her skills and knowledge with children and adults that share that same passion. She has been trained in the areas of ballet, jazz, tap, hip hop, modern, lyrical, tumbling, and cheerleading. She has over 10 years of experience in teaching all ages of kids and adults with various studios and organizations.  She also has training in creative movement and mommy & me. Candice is a Licensed Zumba fitness instructor with a specialty license in Zumba Kids and Zumba Kids Jr.

African Dance for Kids – SHAKIRA ADAMS  holds a Bachelors of Science in Dance Education, a Bachelors of Science in Music Education, and a Masters of Education in Sports Medicine from Bowling Green State University and a Bachelors of Science in Nursing from University of Cincinnati. She spent some time in West Africa, Ghana, training in traditional West African dance and brought African dance back to Northwest Ohio, teaching children, adults, dancers and non-dancers.  She led and choreographed the Bowling Green State University Afro-Caribbean Dance Ensemble for five years.  Shakira has taught African dance workshops and performed throughout Ohio.  In Cincinnati she has taught children’s classes in dance and science in many places, including the Cincinnati Family Enrichment Center and The Super Saturday Program.  Shakira also teaches African Dance for adults & teens.

Tap Beginner Level 1 – ALISSA STACHOWSKI holds a BA degree in Dance from The University of Akron and completed additional coursework in Early Childhood Education from the University of Cincinnati.  She has taught dance and fitness classes to kids and adults, as well as worked at after school programs for children and teens.  Alissa is currently the Studio Manager and Volunteers Coordinator at CDT and has a 6-year-old daughter who would like to learn to tap dance with other kids.

Yoga for Kids – LARITA HAYDEN has studied and completed her 300 hour yoga teacher training at World Peace Yoga and received her kids yoga certification with Rainbow Kids Yoga.  Since 2008 she has worked with children in different capacities. She started with St. Rita’s School for the Deaf assisting with preschoolers in the Loft program, then worked for Lakota School district as a Sign Language Interpreter. She also worked for Cincinnati Public School as a teacher’s assistant and helped out in the after school program at Central Montessori Academy where she also taught yoga to children.  She is a mother of two young children, Zoe & Oliver.  She currently teaches yoga at St. Rita’s school for the deaf. She looks forward to teaching yoga to your little yogi. 

Modern for Kids – GLENDA FIGUEIREDO began her training when she was three years old in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Her dance background is Ballet, Jazz, Modern, Traditional Brazilian dances and Contemporary dance, the last being her true passion. She has been dancing and teaching professionally for over 12 years. She has performed throughout Brazil, as well as in Argentina and Chile with a dance company from Rio de Janeiro.  She has been part of countless dance events (television shows and dance competitions) in Brazil with brilliant outcomes. In the US, Glenda was a dancer for Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey circus for 5 years, where she also had her aerial training and performed over 400 hundred shows a year. After spending  time on the road, she went back to Brazil and got a degree in Education (Portuguese and English), but she was never far from dance. Together with her love and dedication for performing she has also managed to keep up a passion for teaching. Her goal as an instructor is to give her best to the students and bring out the best of them. Always intense, during her classes she looks for extra sources of creativity and energy. She is a kind woman and passionate artist ready to dance and live life to the fullest.
