FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: CORRECTED & UPDATED PRESS RELEASE

May 29, 2013

CINCINNATI, OHIO — Contemporary Dance Theater proudly ends its 40th Anniversary Season with a presentation of Pilobolus Dance Theatre, of Washington Depot, Connecticut. The well-known dance company’s tour to Cincinnati on June 14 & 15, 2013 is almost sold-out, and it’s no wonder: the company (which is also celebrating a near-40th anniversary) has performed for crowds in over 64 countries live, and has been seen on television in commercials and programs such as the Academy Awards, NFL telecasts, Oprah, Late Night with Conan O’Brien, and CBS’ 60 Minutes.

Pilobolus is a modern performance company, founded in 1971, that to this day wears its revolutionary stripes on its sleeves. In keeping with its fundamentally collective creative process, Pilobolus Dance Theatre now curates and convenes groups of diverse artists—including the MIT Distributed Robotics Laboratory, Art Spiegelman, OK Go, Radiolab, and many others—to make inventive, athletic, witty, collaborative performance works on stage and screen using the human body as a medium for expression. Pilobolus makes art to build community. Audiences are invited to a free meet-the-artists reception following Friday’s performance, courtesy of Contemporary Dance Theater.

Contemporary Dance Theater presented Pilobolus last season, as well to sold out crowds, and is delighted to ends its 40th anniversary celebrations with Pilobolus’ works, “Automaton” (a ‘cyborg’ of a dance, questionning differences between human and machine), “The Transformation” (a shadow piece, which Pilobolus is known for), “Molly’s Not Dead,” “Ocellus” (a quartet for four men), and “Sextet 2013” (an exciting and high-energy, new collaboration).

“Automation” is a new collaboration (2012) with the internationally renowned choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui. The result is a cyborg of a dance that questions the difference between human and machine. Somewhere between Tron and Bladerunner, “Automation” takes place in a mirrored world that allows us to view multiple angles at the same time. Deep emotions punctuate the intoxicating rhythms of the machine as we experience a journey through a time that seems yet to come.

“The Transformation” is a shadow piece from 2009 in which a young woman is transformed; it was created in collaboration with Steven Banks, lead writer for the brilliant, animated series, SpongeBob SquarePants.

“Ocellus” is a classic Pilobolus men’s quartet revived from 1971 for the 2008 season, thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts’ American Masterpieces: Dance Initiative. (Advisory: “Ocellus” will be performed nearly nude in dance thongs.)

The 2013 collaborative work, “Sextet 2013,” with Trish Sie, is a high-octane romp, full of raw energy and berserk horseplay. Featuring twelve ropes and six dancers, the piece is at various times wild, rowdy, dangerous, sexy, and absurd. Tijuana’s Nortec Collective Presents: Bostich & Fussible has partnered to create the unique soundtrack, which fuses infectious modern rhythms and traditional Northern Mexican border music.

The artists may be available for phone, radio, or television interview. Please inquire with dance@cdt-dance.org directly as soon as possible.

Contemporary Dance Theater presents Pilobolus Dance Theatre at the Aronoff Center for the Arts in its Jarson-Kaplan Theater, located at 650 Walnut Street, Cincinnati, OH 45202. Tickets ($34-44) are almost sold out, so audiences are encouraged to act now by contacting the theater’s box office in person, online at cincinnatiarts.org, or over the phone at (513) 621-ARTS (2787).
