What is Performance and Time Arts?A project of Contemporary Dance Theater, Performance and Time Arts (PTA) is Cincinnati’s longest-running performance art series showcasing new work in dance, music, theater, spoken-word and multi-media. In the laboratory setting of the 1890s College Hill Town Hall, both seasoned and emerging artists are given the opportunity to share innovative work and experiments with Cincinnati audiences. Cincinnati CityBeat says PTA “consistently brings together the city’s most eclectic and edgy batch of performing arts.” |
In the lab on April 19 & 20, 2013 at 8pm:
A benefit performance for Contemporary Dance Theater’s 40th Anniversary, featuring 40 Artists!

Poet VALERIE CHORNIS BICKETT won an individual artist grant from the City of Cincinnati in 2007 and published her first book of poetry, Triandafilo, in 2009, about a mother-daughter when the connection to place is lost. She will be performing “Two Poems About Birth” — her birth and her oldest son’s.
COLLEEN BYRNE, MEGHANN VINCIE KING and EMILY SCOTT will choreograph and dance together in this piece based on poetry from Echoes Across the Blue Ridge, recounting Appalachian lives set to bluegrass and folk music.
Solo artist STEPHANIE ANN DANYI integrates media and dance to perform “Everthing All of the Time,” with the help of stand-alone video work.

This year’s junior and senior FACTORY STREET STUDIO DANCERS capstone project explores the relevance of artists’ manifestos to the creative process, especially for young dancers and choreographers developing their own artistic voices as individuals. This piece will feature more than a dozen dancers from the Athens, Ohio studio.
Composer TURKAR GASIMZADA and percussionist DREW DOLAN collaborate on a new work featuring text by absurdist playwright Samuel Beckett and improvised percussion.
Dancer and choreographer CHELSEA SONG GOETTGE will synthesize spoken word and movement for a new work about personal elevation and achievement. She will also collaborate with PTA regular F. KEITH WAHLE for a dance performance accompanied by his poem, “The Pictures,” about an afternoon spent with an old acquaintance.
RICHARD HAGUE and MICHAEL HENSON will perform an excerpt from Hague’s Where Drunk Men Go, with guitar accompaniment by Henson. The performance was a critic’s pick at the 2009 Cincinnati Fringe Festival.
Composer and co-founder of North American New Opera Workshop (NANOWorks) JENNIFER JOLLEY and dancer KARI OLSON, who trained with Cincinnati’s Contemporary Dance Theater, will be perform “Ticket Punch,” the third movement of Jolley’s Speilzeug Strassenbahn (Toy Trolley) as recreated for 8-bit playback by the composer with original movement by Olson.
SANGBONG NAM, a Korean-born composer and doctoral candidate and instructor in electronic music at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music, will create a work that describes the Musical Poi (mPoi), a unique sensor-based musical instrument rooted in the ancient art of poi spinning. GINGER TAKAS re-debuts in dance after a 10-year hiatus with a post-modern collaboration with dancers CHESHIRE HARDCASTLE, NICKI KLOSTERMAN, and ALISSA STACKOWSKI featuring original music by drummer, percussionist and keyboardist DAN DORFF. JOHN RAY’S A Tiger on the Slopes features the playwright as President Bill Clinton in an imagined exchange with an idealistic young woman at the World Economic Forum. The piece also features actresses ELIZABETH MARTIN and SHEILA MUDD.Join Our Mailing List to Stay in Touch!
