DIANE GERMAINE – Writer, Poet & Choreographer
Performance Description: Title – SNAFATIGSMA (Pt. 5)
“SNAFATIGSMA (Pt. 5)” is an acronym created from the titles of poems used in the first version of this dance/poetry work by Diane Germaine. With each performance, the poems and the accompanying dance pieces are changeable. The inclusive selections in this work can be satirical, self-deprecatory, pensive, elegies, socio-political, etc.
BIO: Diane Germaine is an independent Choreographer/Master Instructor as well as a Writer and Photographer who has received grants from NEA, Ohio Arts Council, City of Cincinnati, and Greater Cincinnati Dance Alliance (GCDA).
Described by Cincinnati Enquirer as “One of 8 to watch…” and by the New York Times as “a superstar modern dancer, as boneless as a shadow and in control of every kinetic nuance,” she is originally from NYC, was trained by members of the Martha Graham Dance Company, and at Joffrey’s American Ballet Centre, graduated with Honors in Dance and English from Performing Arts High School, was Principal Soloist of the Paul Sanasardo Dance Company (NYC) for 13 years receiving critical acclaim for roles in Fatal Birds, Pictures In Our House, Metallics, Excursions, Cut Flowers, Shadows, The Path and as Poet Anne Sexton in A Consort for Dancers. She was Founder/Artistic Director-Choreographer of Orchesthai, Inc/Diane Germaine & Dancers (NYC) and was a founding member of Greater Cincinnati Dance Alliance (GCDA).
Signature choreographic works include: Stop-Over, Journal, Playground, Such a Landscape, Dust, Didi-a Life, Nighthawks, Fated Tango, Monologue & Little Deaths, Dos Gallos y una Dulzura, Aperture 1 & 2, Small Craft Warnings, Get It While You Can, and Fallout. Solos include: Fallen Leaves, Rain, The Empty Room, and Green Girl. Many of these works have included visual projections – some created with Ms. Germaine’s original photographs.
She has been a Master Instructor in the USA and abroad for companies and schools such as Israel’s Bat-Dor Dance Company, Batsheva Company, and The Kibbutz Dance Company; London Contemporary at The Place; Norsk Opera Ballet (Oslo); Dramaten (Stockholm); Skidmore College; American University; North Carolina School of the Arts; University of Illinois-Urbana; Summer Dance Laboratory at Saratoga Performing Arts Centre (SPAC); Summer Dance Lab at Fort Worden & Walla Walla (WA) via First Chamber Dance Company; and in Cincinnati for Contemporary Dance Theatre and De La Dance Company.
A writer of poetry, stories, skits and plays, Diane is published in the Chronogram Magazine; Towards a Better World (SOS Art annuals); OhioDance Newsletter; A Few Good Words (Cincinnati Writer’s Project anthology); Harriet’s Corner (OAT). She has read at Women Writing for a Change, Wise Women events at the YWCA, Joseph Beth Booksellers, Woodstock Poets Society, the Cincinnati Public Library, for the Salon at WWf(a)C, at MOTR Pub, Second Sundays on Main St., Kennedy Heights Arts Centre, at Dance Cincinnati [2013 and 2017], OhioDance Showcase , and directed a staged reading of her play “Not Yet” in 2012 for a salon presented by Women’s Way of Ohio/KY at WWf(a)C.
In addition, as a photographer, Ms. Germaine has had original photographs in several art shows at Kennedy Heights Arts Center (Cincinnati) and in video projections for dance and literary events. Recently she developed, staged, and performed in a poetry and performance series entitled Snafatigsma with Michelle Bump-Morano and Neile E. Martin for Dance Cincinnati 2017 at De La Dance Company’s new studio theater in Kennedy Heights, Cincinnati.
