…last summer Gotheiner packed four members of his company and a videographer into a car and they drove cross-country, following the route outlined by Kerouac. The result was a wonderfully rich work. …(Gotheiner) possesses a calm sensitivity that contributes to the richness of his dance inventions, allowing them to burst out into their surroundings.”  Art Times critic, Dawn Lille

Contemporary Dance Theater’s 2018-19 Season will begin with its presentation of ZviDance on October 26 & 27, 2018.

ON THE ROAD is a multi-media collaboration of contemporary dance and video design, utilizing Jack Kerouac’s seminal book On the Road as a point of departure to meditate on the current American notion of youth, freedom and individualism. For the initiation of the creative process, Zvi invited four dancers and the Video Artist Josh Higgason to join on a 2-week artistic research cross-county trip from New York to San Francisco, retracing Kerouac’s first trip to the west, as described in On The Road. On occasion, the team would stop the car and dance/improvise on the road or in random locations near the road, videoing the process. This multi-media work was constructed from the material the team collected during this trip. The commissioned music score is by the Swedish Composer Jukka Rintamaki and the Lighting Design is by Mark London.

The New York Times dance critic, Alastair Macaulay:

“With fabulous hubris, the choreographer Zvi Gotheiner, in his new piece, “On The Road” has tried rendering Jack Kerouac’s 1957 novel as dance theater …he made a good — often wonderful — dance. … He introduced the “road” idea with unpeopled film, landscape hurtling past as if seen from a rushing car. Then, he gave us a two-tier dance, with dance onscreen (set in various landscapes) coexisting with dance onstage; the same dancers appeared in both. His chief subject is anthropological: the new American society of the Beat age, informal in manners and sexual suggestiveness… His dancers… were vividly individual, marvelous …. And Mr. Gotheiner caught the road theme in the ways dancers passed across the stage with changing characters, and in the kinesthetically appealing combination of intense vitality and casual manners.”

Interludes critic, Adrian Dimanlig:

“… The hour long dance piece, part of BAM’s ongoing Next Wave Festival, is less of a literal translation of the seminal novel than an attempt to convey its atmosphere – the sense of freedom and spontaneity of being on a road trip. Past and future don’t register. It’s the present that matters, a tenet so central to dance as an art form. Mr. Gotheiner and his company… do a marvelous job of accomplishing this goal. Unlike many contemporary dance works I’ve seen (which seem to dissipate into thin air as soon as they’re over), there’s a vitality and clear sense of intent to On the Road that has stuck with me for days afterwards. The dancers are beautifully idiosyncratic, giving a sense of “characters” being on the BAM Fisher stage. Mr. Gotheiner’s choreography, which is performed against the backdrop of Joshua Higgason’s hypnotic video designs and performed to Jukka Rintamki’s distinctive score, is muscular and driving, without being unnecessarily frenetic or fussy. This is inspired, clear-eyed dance-making.”
